Types home insurance

Home insurance provides defense against hazards including fire, flood, theft, and severe weather for both the home's structural structure and the items inside.

What are the different types of home insurance?

The three forms of house insurance we provide: buildings only cover, The terms "home insurance" and "contents alone" are occasionally used interchangeably. What each level of insurance covers is listed below:

Buildings insurance

Buildings insurance safeguards your home's actual structure in its physical form. While each policy is different, they all typically cover the costs of restoring or rebuilding your home in the event that it is destroyed or damaged by:

  • Flood and escape of water
  • Fire, smoke and explosions
  • Storms and lightning
  • Natural disasters like earthquakes
  • Subsidence (not all policies cover this)
  • Malicious persons and rioting
  • Collision by vehicles or animals
  • Falling trees
  • Collapse of aerials or satellite dishes.

Most building policies also cover permanent structures (such fitted kitchens and bath suites) as well as outbuildings (like sheds and garages).

Contents insurance

Contents insurance effectively guards any piece of furniture in your house that isn't a part of the building, such the sofas in the living room, beds in the bedrooms, and hallway mirrors. Your freezer's contents may even be covered. The insurance provides coverage against loss and damage brought by:

  • Flood
  • Fire, smoke and explosions
  • Theft and attempted theft
  • Vandalism
  • Storms and lightning
  • Natural disasters
  • Falling trees
  • Leaks from heating or water fixtures.

It's important to keep in mind that with contents insurance, you are not protected against normal wear and tear. It only safeguards you if the aforementioned causes result in the destruction or damage of your possessions.

To cover spills and breakages within the home, you'll typically need to get supplementary "accidental damage cover." You can also decide whether to add extra coverage to protect expensive items like cameras, jewelry, or laptops.

Any objects covered by another policy, pets, lottery tickets, caravans, and trailers are not covered by contents insurance.

Buildings and contents insurance

Buildings and contents insurance is exactly what it says on the tin: combined coverage for both buildings and contents. You can save time on administration by combining the two types of insurance into one policy. There will only be one renewal date to remember, as well.
